6. São Francisco da Penitência

Welcome to see another church, São Francisco da Penitência. It consists of three sections each having its own entrance. Although the façade looks humble, the interior of the church is extremely rich. It was started in 1657 and finished in 1773. The decoration of gilded wood carving was made by Manuel and Francisco Xavier de Brito. These two artists had their own style called Brito and were famous Portuguese woodcarvers and sculptors.
