5. Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Monte do Carmo
Between 1808 and 1889 the Royal Chapel was what we now know as the parish church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. In 1976 it was replaced by the modern chapel. It is connected to a Carmelite church by a passage. Its stone doorway, Baroque façade as well as white and gold carving cannot go unnoticed. The cathedral is generously decorated – there is a silver altar and plenty of carving. Nearby guests can observe the last surviving street oratory in the city with the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Cabo da Boa Esperança the name of which is translated as Our Lady of the Cape of Good Hope.
