The Foreign Office has reported that ‘the security situation throughout Iraq remains uncertain, and could deteriorate quickly. Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Iraq. There’s also a high kidnap threat. While attacks can take place at any time, there’s a heightened threat during religious or public holidays.’

What are we missing? The archaeological city of Samarra was once the capital of the Abbasid empire extending from Tunisia to Central Asia. It is a treasure trove of ancient monuments including the 9th century Great Mosque and its spiral minaret. Hatra is another site of archaeological importance; a large fortified city under the influence of the Parthian Empire and capital of the first Arab Kingdom, complete with spectacular temples that have withstood the desert winds.
