7. St. Andrews
It is primarily university town and former royal castle, which is located on the east coast of Scotland. By the year 1000 the city became the seat of the Scottish church and received its present name.
Soon it became a place for pilgrimage for most Britons, which made it rich. St. Andrews Cathedral, the largest and most famous cathedral in Scotland, now lies in ruins. St. Andrews has the oldest golf course known as the Old Course, which is known worldwide as the home of golf. James II was banned in 1457 for playing golf because it interfered with archery practice.
